Have you ever seen someone with endless energy and wondered, “How do they do it?” For most of us, the reality is far from boundless energy; we often feel tired and sluggish, especially at specific times of day, and sometimes, we can’t even pinpoint why.
Years ago, I was right there, too. Migraines and asthma plagued me, and my energy levels fluctuated wildly. I was always on the go, constantly exhausted and often running on nothing but adrenaline. Then, in 2002, I faced a hard stop: CFS/ME, chronic fatigue syndrome, forced me to look closely at my life. It was only when I was no longer able to ignore my body’s demands that I realised how much I had been neglecting my own needs.
The main reason for my exhaustion was not a mystery illness; I had poured my energy into everyone else. I was constantly giving, often at the expense of my well-being. I had neglected my own needs and priorities, unaware of the emotional baggage I had been carrying for years. Life was happening to me, not for me, and it was time for a change.
When conventional medicine didn’t provide my needed answers, I turned to Reiki and homeopathy. These therapies didn’t just help me recover; they opened up new perspectives, giving me tools to reconnect with myself. During my first homoeopathy consultation, I was asked about my childhood, relationships, career, even my sense of fairness and whether I thought life was kind or cruel. I was finally asking questions about myself – something I had rarely done before. I began to realise that my body had, in a way, done me a favour. By forcing me to stop, it gave me the chance to reflect and find a new way forward.
For the first time, I connected with myself. I became aware of my needs, my wants, my aspirations, and I made myself a priority. This journey of self-awareness was transformative, and it’s one that each of us can embark on.
The Journey of Self-Realisation & Personal Awareness
Self-awareness is an empowering journey, and it starts with asking yourself some important questions:
- How well do I know myself?
- Do I expect others to understand me, even when I might not fully understand myself?
- Do I live for myself or through other people’s expectations?
- Do I nurture my happiness, and do I feel worthy of it?
Understanding ourselves is crucial but often overlooked. We tend to wear masks, hiding parts of ourselves for fear of judgment. We can lose sight of what truly makes us happy or feel fulfilled. A friend once said, “Most people don’t know what they want, and those who do often don’t know how to achieve their goals.” This is a sentiment many of us can relate to, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Mapping Your Journey
If you want to learn more about your life patterns, try creating a personal timeline. Draw a line representing your life and mark major positive and challenging events. Use different colours to signify milestones, relationships, career changes, illnesses, and anything else that has shaped your journey. You may discover patterns or beliefs that no longer serve you, and this process can be both enlightening and empowering.
Self-realisation is one of the most beautiful journeys we can take, yet it is also one of the most personal. When we begin to understand ourselves, we become better equipped to shape our lives rather than feeling that life is shaping us. Expecting others to understand us during this process isn’t always realistic – we are constantly evolving.
So, how well do you know yourself? Are there habits or beliefs that no longer align with who you are? By becoming more self-aware, we can start to shed the layers that no longer serve us and build a life that feels right, fulfilling, and genuinely our own.
Best wishes on your journey to self-discovery and fulfilment.
